Top Social Media Media Sites Should You Really Care About

I’m sure you already know that everyone and their mother is on Facebook right? Facebook, that behemoth of a platform with 500 million users is number one. If you want to have visibility online and engage in the platform that offers the best source of social media traffic to your website or blog you need to be on the number one social networking site in the world.
What about the number two player? If you have a social networking campaign to launch or you want to engage and make “friends” so that you can eventually interest people in what you are doing online, where would you go after Facebook? Well, it surprised me in writing this article that the answer is StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon is a social bookmarking site where people can “Stumble” web pages that peak their interest, write reviews, rate, and share their discoveries with their followers. We should all care about StumbleUpon if we care about what social media is making connections. The Social Media Examiner wrote a nice little article on how to use StumbleUpon, so I won’t get into how I am using it until the end of this piece.
When TechCrunch first reported StumbleUpon’s #2 ranking in April, they had StatCounters Global Stats graph from Mar 2009 to March 2010. Well, I did another StatCounter graph from Nov 2009 to Nov 2010, and the results still show StumbleUpon as the number two most trafficked social media site.
<!– You may change the values of width and height above to resize the chart –>
We’re not talking members here, because StumbleUpon has roughly 11 million users versus 175 million Twitter users. We are talking about level of importance if the results from StatCounter are correct, and we are going to assume they are, because TechCrunch is influential enough to have done their homework. The conclusion is StumbleUpon is an important social media traffic generating platform for your blog and website. Similar to Twitter’s ReTweet, as you stumble-upon more content and discover fascinating new information that has yet to be stumbled, you will gain new subscribers who will see a plethora of the stuff you found good enough to “Like”. StumbleUpon requires you to do minimal self-promotion of you own site(s), and instead share information about new websites that you recommend. Align the content, and relationships you’ve created on StumbleUpon, with your burgeoning “StumbleUpon Station” correctly and the potential rewards for mega traffic back to your own website is almost guaranteed.
Now for my take on how to use StumbleUpon. If you really want to get your blogs and website to be eyeballed, get yourself StumbleUpons’s link shortener su.pr simply by opening a free account. Copy and paste your Tweets in the box supplied with the original link to the article, hit the shorten link button, check the Twitter and/or Facebook check-boxes and then click on “post” or schedule the post, and you are finished.
Your article will be posted by using su.pr shortening service to your Twitter and Facebook accounts. You can then click on the article snapshot and “vote it up”. After you have done this, simply go to your StumbleUpon profile and share the article with your other subscribers and if you are fortunate, they will also vote it up as well. Alternately, if you don’t mind your screen real-estate being infringed upon, you can certainly download the StumbleUpon Firefox add-on and the website will be available in the toolbar of your browser. The pay back for the browser add-on is it appears StumbleUpon gives more credence to the content you’re sharing when you do your stumbling and liking through the frame, because you are now fully part of the community.
Having been on StumbleUpon for a couple of years and having hardly had a go at it, I are now armed and ready to really use it in a manner that clearly works for a large majority of its subscribers.
The Latest Mobile Phone Scams

Mobile phone scams are on the rise and even though technology in this area evolves quickly scammers are constantly coming up with new ways to take advantage of unsuspecting victims. It was recently revealed that mobile phone scams cost the average consumer five times more than PC scams. With this in mind it has become useful to know what methods tech savvy fraudsters use to separate you from your hard earned cash.
The M-Scam
One of the most common scams starts with a text message congratulating you for winning a holiday or some other prize it gives you instructions on how to collect your prize. All you have to do is call a number which usually begins with 0906. When you call the number you are actually being charged a premium rate which goes straight to the scammers. Unknowingly you hold one for several minutes listening to a long message and never receive your prize. This is a widely used method of con artistry and millions of these messages are sent everyday.
The Missed Call
As the name suggest this method starts with a missed call which the victim calls back and is re-directed to a premium rate number, which takes you through some sort of message highlighting that you have successfully won a prize. You then proceed to hold on for a few minutes and receive a hefty bill at the end of the month from your network provider.
The Reverse Text Message
In this case you may be looking online for some ringtones or wallpapers for your phone you come across a site sign up for a subscription. You are then continuously bombarded with text messages which are charged at anything up to 2.00 a message. There are legitimate services that do not charge extortionate amounts, but you do have to be careful who you use.
The #90 trick
It begins with a company calling you claiming to be a telephone engineer. They go on to instruct you to press #90 or #09 on your phone this then gives them the ability to access your SIM card so they can bill calls to your mobile phone.
Mobile phone scams are literally making criminals millions. In a recent case three men were sentence to 5 years in prison because they set up a company called Pixonyx Ltd, which supplied phone lines for costly international calls. They then collected customer’s identities and credit card details and set up hundreds of O2 mobile contracts and used the mobile phone lines to call the premium rate numbers they had set up through Pixonyx Ltd. Once their profits started to fall they then sold the handsets. In just 4 month O2 reported losses of over 2 million from the scam. The three men were finally caught when the calls were traced; they were later found guilty of conspiracy to defraud O2 and given 5 years each in prison.
As technology advances scammers will always find new ways to steal money in a variety of inventive ways always be aware and tell your friends and family about these methods.
Computer Security – 5 Basic Ways to Keep Your Data and Your Computer Secure

Security is one of the largest and growing sectors of I.T. With the number of hackers and identity theft on the increase, businesses and home users have to be vigilant and aware of security risks in order to keep private information secure.
Computer security technology has been created for a number of reasons. Due to theft, corruptions of data as well as damage, computer security has been created to tackle all these three sides, which can incur loss of data, corruption of and even theft. It essentially stops an unauthorised individual from tampering with, copying without permission, stealing or corrupting/falsifying information. Unlike most computer related technology, it disables unwanted behaviour, rather than enables particular behaviour.
There are a number of ways that stop anyone from breaching security, including basic elements such as anti-virus and internet security programs, which protect your computer against a range of viruses. Firewalls also protect your computer from others breaching your network, making it harder for hackers to break through your system.
Security must also be particularly thought about in conjunction with wireless networks, as these can easily be hacked and used by others. Usually with a provider, you will be provided with an already encrypted wireless router, but some providers do not, meaning you have encrypt it yourself. It’s a worthwhile task as it stops others from using your internet and protects your private information.
In business settings, security goes that little further due to the importance of the information need protecting. Smart cards and biometric systems allow only certain users to access the computer or particular information. Although, at home there is no way you would use this technology, you can protect your computer using access authorisation restrictions, which include the active log on screen for a whole computer or the multiple user log on option, where access can be restricted to particular files or not.
An important part of data safety and protection is backing up data. Always back up any important information on a second hard drive, disc, USB and an internet based back-up program.
Always, when creating passwords make a strong password – this means a password that is harder to break through. Including numbers and capitals makes a hacker’s job so much harder as they have billions of choices, increasing the likelihood that the hacker won’t get through.
