Your health, energy and vitality are increased, as well as your awareness and connection with yourself encompassing your body, your mind and your soul.

Sandra focuses on 3 main systems of the body: the skeletal structure, the muscles and the nervous system. She can work through clothes for those in pain with recent injuries or those preferring to be clothed. Or she can combine these modalities with Swedish Massage using draping and massage creme.

More important than what she does is the how. Her body work is personally tailored for each individual's body. She works within each body's own comfort not going into pain or tension. Her work is very much like untying a knot in a shoelace. Instead of pulling and yanking and demanding, she creates space and slack in those knots in the body and voila the body does the rest. So she, the client, and the client's body are all partners---part of the same team working together with ease and awareness.

Her treatments release pain and increase mobility as well as creating deep relaxation in people from very young babies to 80 year olds. Chronic or acute conditions respond well to her gentle thorough touch. She also works with animals---horses, dogs, cats.

    Ortho-Bionomy®

Ortho-Bionomy gently and slowly moves your skeleton: your thigh or your neck, your hip or your individual fingers into positions of comfort away from pain and immobilities. Your bones, your structure with its joints are used with positional release techniques to not only release the tensions or pain but also to increase your flexibility, mobility and range of motion effortlessly. When your skeleton is balanced your muscles also become relaxed, circulation is improved, mental and emotional tensions resolve and dissolve.

To experience for yourself the simplicity of how Ortho-Bionomy works lets use your neck. Slowly rotate your head to the right and then to the left as if you were saying no. YOU NEED TO DO THIS SLOWLY. IF IT HURTS, IF THERE IS PAIN-EVEN A LITTLE DON’T MOVE PAST THAT POINT. Even if it feels stretched or resistant don’t force it, don’t move past that point of comfort and ease. NOW—notice in which direction it is easiest to move or in which you had a greater range of movement. Then go hang out on that side. If for instance it was easier going to your left, allow your head to go to your left and discover the most comfortable place on that left side to rest, to stop. Stay there, hang out for 15-30 seconds then slowly bring your head back to looking straight ahead. Now recheck by rotating your head SLOWLY to the right and then to the left. In most cases you will find that it will be more easy, balanced and pain free to move in both directions.

Basically most conditions or problems can be effectively worked with through Ortho-Bionomy no matter how acute or chronic. So headaches, whiplash, low back pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, dislocations, frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia as well as head injuries, car accidents, and digestive problems respond well to Ortho-Bionomy sessions. You will usually know in 1-3 sessions if Ortho-Bionomy is effective for you.

It is an effective modality for people of all ages including children, babies, the elderly or clients who are in pain or very sensitive. In fact, it often has amazing results when other modalities have not proven effective. And it is a wonderful tool to be used with any other bodywork modality. Classes are taught here in Albuquerque and through out the United States and world for those interested. Both professionals as well as lay people can easily learn its simple techniques of moving away from pain into comfort and mobility without force. You can also learn how to use it on yourself with your own body. It is usually done on a massage table. It can be done through clothes or combined with any other bodywork modality—such as Swedish massage and used with draping.

    Cranial Sacral

Within our body are many different fluids: blood, lymphatic, interstitial---between the cells. Another fluid is your cerebrospinal fluid. Cranial Sacral work releases and regulates this fluid and its flow. The cerebrospinal fluid is created deep within your brain in a hollow space called a ventricle. It flows down and around the whole brain then out of the skull and down and around the spinal cord.

Just as your heartbeat can be felt and monitored in different places of your body so too with the cerebrospinal fluid. Cranial Sacral is a type of bodywork that monitors this fluid and its flow or lack of flow and helps bring balance and fluidity back throughout the entire body. It is especially useful for the nervous system yet it affects all the systems of our body---circulatory, digestive, muscular, nervous, lymphatic, endocrine, and skeletal as well.

There are listening stations on the body that are used to assess the Cranial Sacral flow. Instead of a pulse beat like the heart of 50-80 beats a minute, the Cranial Sacral rhythm is a tidal rhythm of about 12 cycles each minute. It feels just like a tide, just like a wave after it has already broken and slowly and gently slides up on the beach, pauses, stops, and then slowly starts to recede back into the ocean.

Besides the listening stations there are several places on the body called diaphragms. By releasing these diaphragms from the pelvis to the head flow and balance are reestablished. The bones of the skull are also gently worked with so that the cerebrospinal fluid is not dammed up within the cranium. What affects the head or cranium interferes with and affects the pelvis and vice a versa. So head injuries, headaches, acute or chronic accidents and injuries, hormonal imbalances, chronic nervous tension can be effectively relieved with Cranial Sacral work. It is very gentle and soothing and you often can drift off to sleep or into deep relaxation with this work.

There are different styles of Cranial Sacral. My particular method is gentle and energetic with roots in Ortho-Bionomy and Upledger.

    Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Resolution

We have all had traumas in our lives be they physical, mental or emotional. Most of the time our lives work fairly well. Yet at times our functioning can dramatically break down. This can be due to a car accident, a surgery, a fall, abuse—physical or emotional, a natural catastrophe, even seeing someone else injured or killed. When the way we connect with and interact with the world breaks down or gets limited in some way a variety of different symptoms may occur. We may not sleep well. We may be highly sensitive and reactive. We may withdraw from many activities we use to do. Depression, anxiety, reliving or avoiding the incident may occur. Our quality of life is just not there.

With Somatic Experiencing® work the trauma is not relived or re-enacted. Instead the somatic sense of your body is used as a tool to release the trauma in slow gentle easy baby steps. The somatic sense is composed of simple awareness, sensation, gestures, meanings, and images in your body. By being aware of and tracking these sensations and images within your body they change, transform and release acute and chronic symptoms in a short time.

You can do this work sitting comfortable in a chair with the therapist in a chair nearby or you can combine this with a regular bodywork session such as Massage, Ortho-Bionomy, or Cranial Sacral. You work as a team noticing sensations of heat, movement, pressure, direction of flow and images: hard like a golf ball or spongy like a racquet ball, red and hot embers of a fire, pulling like taffy, etc. You then communicate what you are experiencing as you are experiencing it. The therapist is the guide and navigator not allowing you to reenter the trauma but release it in little bits and pieces until it is only a part of your life not taking over your whole existence.

I’ve worked with trauma along with my bodywork modalities since 1994. There are more and more people doing trauma work today then ever before. The classes taught by Dr. Peter Levine, the founder of the 3 year Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner training certification program, which is taught around the world, has written Waking the Tiger and also has tapes and CD’s on healing children who have experienced trauma and healing sexual trauma.     Massage

Therapeutic Swedish Massage is the most well known of all the different body work modalities. Like other bodywork modalites it affects your skin, muscles, circulation, and nervous and skeletal systems as well as the endocrine, respiratory and digestive systems.

After taking off whatever clothes you are comfortable in removing, you lie on a massage table under a draping sheet---used both for modesty as well as for warmth. Then the part of your body being worked on is uncovered. Oils or creams are smoothed onto your skin and a combination of flowing strokes, kneading, friction, percussion, vibratory and joint movements are applied at the rate and pressure your body desires. Often soothing music is played softly in the background during your massage.

You should be warm and comfortable. Your session should feel relaxing not hurtful, bruising, or fatiguing. It is definitely your right and your duty to your body to speak up about your preferences and your comfort. Therapists know techniques but you know your body.

Swedish Massage releases stress, headaches, low back or neck pain, and muscular tension. It improves circulation, so is excellent for blood pressure problems, and diabetes. There are very few conditions that would not benefit from a relaxing massage. It increases your health, energy and vitality as you lie on the table letting your body and mind relax, letting go of busy thoughts, breathing deeper and slowing down. Besides relieving pains and tensions it is just a wonderful time to recharge and renew.

I incorporate Ortho-Bionomy and Cranial Sacral into my massage. I’ve found that it shortens the time required to release tight muscles and greatly increases the overall effectiveness of the session.

    Energy Work

There are many different types of energy work available: Reiki, Polarity, HoOponopono, Healing Touch to name a few. Any modality even Swedish Massage can be utilized in a more energetic way.

Energy is not strange or unfamiliar. You already know of energy when you turn on a light switch or turn the key in the ignition of your car. In physics we have gravity, electromagnetism, weak and strong nuclear force or energy. Energy is heat, movement, light, sound, sensation. Your bodies too have energy. The life force of your body flows throughout your body charging every cell in its path. This life force has been called many different names throughout the ages: ‘light, prana, chi, cosmic energy, vital force.’ We just have not bothered to differentiate it from the overall physical sensations that we are accustomed to experiencing.

Yet, it can be easily experienced: Rub your hands vigorously together for a minute. Now hold them a few inches apart. Move your hands together and apart, between 1-6 inches, and see where you feel the strongest sensations or energy. It may be felt as a tingling, vibrating, hot or cold, a magnetic field. You may even feel as if you had a ball between your hands. Notice how big or small this ball becomes as you circularly move your hands together and apart keeping the rounded shape.

Our bodies are made up of energy: energy moving from your mind into your body, from your body into your mind. Energy extends outside of your physical body. Kirilian photography has captured this on film. The ‘halo’ or aura around our electromagnetic body is clearly visible and can be felt and seen with training. Your energy body can feel things. Have you been in a room and with your back turned to someone known without seeing them or talking to them that they were mad, sad, happy? You could sense it, feel it, know it. Your energy body can get injured, blocked, dirty and it can heal and be cleaned.

Basically energy work is simply a subtle gentle way of working with the body or off the body to promote healing and balance. The focus, awareness and intent of both the therapist as well as you, the client, facilitates healing and releases pain from acute and chronic or traumatic injuries or conditions. I use this work in my practice to lesser or greater extents depending upon you body and your needs at that session. (Molecules of Emotion-the Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine by Candace Pert is an interesting read on energy and the body from a scientific understanding.)

Please read the next section below for more discussion on Energy Work with scars, viscersa and tissue work.

    Scars/Visceral/Tissue Work

I use both physical and energetic techniques to work with these. Please read the Ortho-Bionomy®, Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Resolution, and Energy Work explanations to get a fuller understanding.

Scars are easily and quickly worked with. They have many layers not just what you see on the surface of the body. You basically gently follow, track, and hold in preferences and they soften, unpucker, lighten in color and release their restrictions or pain.

With Visceral Work we are working with the organs of the body in the same way we work with scars. The only difference is that we can not physically see them. Both you and I track and share our awarenesses physically in sensation terms of heat, cold, movement, color, sound, images and follow the changes as the body notices, resolves and balances.

Tissue Work is also the same as working with scars or the viscera except this time we are working with one of the 4 tissues that the body is made up of: epithelial---like the skin or linings of vessels and organs, muscles, nerves or the connective tissue—bones/blood/ fluids/everything else. As you can see the largest part of our body is made up of connective tissue. With all of my work but especially with this work I encourage and rely upon teamwork between you and me to most accurately and quickly access the information there. Then we both stay out of the way and let the body do the rest.

    Magnets

Electromagnetism is one of the 4 primary forces in the Universe. The others are gravity, and weak and strong nuclear force. Both the earth and our bodies have an electromagnetic field. Since ancient times magnets have been used to release discomfort and create health and balance in the body. Many have used magnets for chronic or acute conditions. They are often an appropriate tool like diet and exercise or a cane or bandage."Magnetism has enormous implications for human health, since our nervous system and brain functions rely to a considerable extent on electrochemical impulses." The Pain Relief Breakthrough, Julian Whitaker, MD. Other books such as those by Dr. Payne: The Body Magnetic, and Getting Started in Magnetic Healing explain how magnetism creates changes in calcium ions to heal broken bones, increases blood flow, and alters pH balance to name a few effects. Hospitals use magnetism in MRI’s and other devices and treatments to aid diagnosis and healing.

There are some safety considerations if you are going to use magnets.
1) People with pacemakers and insulin pumps should not use them because magnets might interfere with the magnetically controlled features of these devices. 2) Pregnant women are cautioned not to use them. 3) It is not a good idea to use them immediately after a sprain, broken bone, injury because of the belief (still unproven) that magnets work by dilating the blood vessels and bringing more fluid to the area. 4) People using patches or transdermal drug delivery systems should not wear magnets close to the patch as more of the drug may enter the system.

I was introduced to magnets and far infared therapy by a client of mine several years ago. Since then I personally have used magnets on myself for a variety of reasons from a fall to sprains to sore or tight muscles and have found them very useful and effective. For questions or more information please feel free to contact me.
