When Should I Get My Child A Mobile Phone?

This is the most discussed topic amongst parents today! Ultimately as a parent the decision is up to you but you do need to look at things realistically. At the age of 10 it is still recommended that a child have help crossing the road. But in saying that there a lot of advantages of your child owning one.
They can contact you in an emergency. They learn responsibility, time management and financial skills. An you have peace of mind knowing that you have contact with them when they are not under your supervision.
In my opinion, if your child can do their chores, such as wash the dishes, keep their room clean and walk the dog on a regular basis, and you feel they are mature enough, then they are probably responsible enough to own a mobile phone.
It is important as a parent and carers that if you do decide to give your child a mobile phone that you take the time to discuss the costs involved and the safety issues.
My book – Kids And Mobile Phones (When Should I Get My Child A Mobile Phone?) Covers all these issues. Parental responsibilities, safety, phone plans, which phone for which age, Limited phones, Internet, and heaps more.
I don’t know about you but I remember as a kid walking to a friends house early in the morning and as long as we were home by the time the street light came on there wasn’t a problem. We went in cars that had no seat belts, rode bikes with no helmets or shoes and we played with cans that had string attatched. There was no Xbox, Playstation, computers or dvd’s, we kept ourselves amused by playing outside or built cubby houses.
I guess what I am trying to say is that the simplicity is gone, we now live in a tech savy world. Technology has changed our lives and our kids along with it. All kids want today is a mobile phone. Imagine if you tied a piece of string to two cans and said, “here you go, this was our mobile in the olden days.”How would they respond?
